NurseGridEnhancing User Engagement Through Thoughtful Design

Intro
Over two consecutive years, I led the design of NurseGrid’s end-of-year campaign—a branded micro-experience celebrating the achievements of NurseGrid’s community of over 500,000 nurses, thoughtfully expressed through their distinct brand voice.
Team
As Director of UX & Design, I guided the end-to-end design strategy and execution, collaborating closely with product managers, engineers, and stakeholders to craft memorable experiences for NurseGrid’s nurse community. My role involved leading a multidisciplinary design team focused on delivering an impactful brand experience, while partnering directly with engineering to ensure seamless implementation of our designs.
Goals
Deepen Community Engagement
Design interactive moments using NurseGrid’s distinct brand voice to strengthen the connection between the platform and its nursing community.
Offer Levity and Reflection
Create a personalized, rewarding experience that provides a lighthearted break from high-stress work environments—infused with humor, empathy, and cultural resonance.
Incentivize Profile Completion
Seamlessly integrated subtle incentives to drive users toward completing their profiles, increasing engagement without disrupting the core experience.
Insights
Nurses often work in high-stress environments and face frequent burnout, yet they find balance through a strong culture of openly sharing both their frustrations and moments of humor.
NurseGrid holds a unique opportunity to bring moments of joy to a demanding profession. With that in mind, we designed the end-of-year campaign as a focused brand experience—tailored specifically to the needs of nurses—infusing excitement, reflection, and a touch of "ha ha" into an otherwise high-pressure career.
deliverables
High-Fidelity Wireframes
Created detailed wireframes for the full experience, including optional experiential components to help prioritize the most impactful features within project constraints.
Personalized Badge Design
Designed custom achievement badges based on user data, reinforcing a sense of pride, recognition, and connection to the brand.
Purposeful Animations
Introduced subtle animations that extended the existing brand language, adding moments of delight without disrupting the user experience.
Community Survey Integration
Launched a targeted pre-campaign poll, with results revealed in the final recap—building anticipation and deepening user engagement.
Engagement Rewards System
Embedded lightweight incentives to encourage profile completion and brand interaction—seamlessly woven into the experience.
Interactive Patient Calculator
Developed a tool prompting users to input patients-per-shift, then revealing their estimated annual total—offering a moment of reflection on their impact.
LEarnings
Designing a brand experience with engagement as the core objective has proven both rewarding and revealing, offering a deeper understanding of what resonates.
After the first year’s recap, I felt the share functionality fell short and prioritized making it more intuitive the following year. Surprisingly, even with the improved sharing experience, 90% of users still chose to share their own screenshots or screen recordings. It became clear that the NurseGrid community tends to be especially creative in how they present their posts. Notably, the full moon graphic emerged as the most shared element two years in a row. We gave it more prominent placement this year, and moving forward, I’d explore incorporating other nurse-specific “superstitions” to tap into that same sense of cultural resonance.
handoff
Our product design handoff is thorough yet adaptable to the unique needs of each project.
Given the focused scope of the end-of-year experience, we prioritized clarity by producing animated references that captured the full interaction flow. While we provided lightweight flow documentation, real-time collaboration played a key role—I partnered closely with our lead developer throughout the two-week sprint to address design intent questions as they arose, ensuring a smooth and accurate implementation.
Results
By developing a deep understanding of the Nursegrid user, we built deeper community connections, fostering enagement and strengthened brand relationships through personalized and distinct experiences.
Testimonial
